Very useful device

I had very specific requirements which led to me purchasing this, but in short the main reason I got it is because it was the only SATA mount I could find on Amazon that was mains powered rather than bus powered. This was essential because I have a 2011 iMac with the now redundant Thunderbolt 2 port. These ports do not supply bus power, so if I wanted to take advantage of the higher speeds of Thunderbolt 2 (via an adaptor) and use modern SSD drives, I needed something like this. The plan worked. The unit itself is quite large, owing to the fact that it also accommodates both 3.5" and 2.5" drives. I only use the smaller size SSD drive, but this actually means there is more air around it so aiding in cooling. It's all very simple to assemble and it's plug and play. No technical expertise is required, it's no more complicated than setting up any kind of disk drive from the olden days!It comes with a 12v mains supply (with 13amp UK plug on the one I bought here in the UK). There is also a USB 3 cable - configured with USB-B on the unit side and USB-A to plug the device into a computer (or in my case a Thunderbolt 2 adaptor). There is power button and a blue LED to indicate the mains power is on.I'm not a very technical person in terms of specs and benchmark tests etc, and I'm sure there are other reviewers who will provide that data. Suffice to say, there is a noticeable difference in the speed of this setup compared to the old HDD I had plugged into the slow USB 2 ports on the iMac.Essentially I've upgraded an old mac to a modern standard. (I'll also be replacing the internal boot drive with an SSD, but that's another story).Another benefit of this, is that I can switch out the SSD drive I bought with it to other drives. For example, the old internal HDD drive I'm taking out of the Mac, can now be used as an external drive for backups etc. If I need to buy more SSD drives in the future, I can save money and just get internal SATA ones rather than the more expensive USB-C external drives. All in all, I'm really happy with this set-up. I've revived an old iMac which was on the verge of redundancy, and have given myself lots of neat options for future memory expansion. And it wasn't exactly expensive!

Change those spare drives into useful backup and portable drives

I have bought a couple of these caddies as they offer USB3 connectivity (think speed) to hard drives I've replaced in the past but still have useful service life as portables or backup drives. The caddies need no tools - no screws - all just push fit, look elegant and simply work.At sub £20 on Prime this is like legalised shop-lifting, and given the price of new drives they are a cheap and reliable and smart way of re-lifing otherwise useless bricks.

Good for a backup drive.

Well made and does the job, the disk inside can get a bit warm due to lack of ventilation but only if you are moving giga bytes.

Handsome enclosure but beware of Windows formatting prompt

I bought a 1TB, 3.5" Seagate HDD at a car boot sale for £3. Luckily it worked and initially I used it with a generic HDD harness, which did the job but wasn't pretty, what with the unused connectors left dangling from short, untidy leads. Also it left the drive itself exposed. (Besides I usually use the harness to connect an internal optical drive to my laptop, so I needed it back.)I transferred the HDD to this handsome enclosure - which was laughably easy; no tools required - but found that Windows now wanted to format the drive. I've no idea why. In the end, I had no choice but to obey having by now shuffled the data I'd already loaded on to other drives (by temporarily reverting to the harness). Even then, for some reason Windows only gave me access to about an eighth of the full capacity; this problem I fixed by using the partition manager application to extend the one partition into the inexplicably unused space. This may be a problem with Seagate drives.Anyway, I now have a 1TB drive for about half the usual price. Even if the HDD breaks down, I can always use the enclosure with another HDD.I must say I find the enclosure exceedingly neat and appealing-looking; even the power/activity light is a pleasing colour and not obnoxiously bright (which makes a change these days; just because LEDs are bright and efficient doesn't mean they always have to be driven at their full brightness!).It does indeed work with USB 3.0; the transfer rate is much better than I'm used to.So, this is highly recommended but beware that Windows might make you format the drive once it's in the enclosure. Plan accordingly! Either start with a drive you want to format anyway or be prepared to take a back-up. Hopefully you won't have this problem at all.

I'm happy with this even with the electronics removed

This is well made.It definitely powers on but I can't speak towards whether it actually works because it was meant to act as an external storage enclosure for an NVR but the NVR couldn't read the hard drive. I don't think this enclosure is to blame but rather the extra convertor cables I had to add on to connection, something might have gone wrong there. In the end I gutted this out, took out the electronics and made a gap to feed in internal wiring directly to the drive whilst it remained in the enclosure. I done this because even without the electronics, for me this would be the best non active 3.5 storage case that I have seen. My setup now works, and I have every confidence in the case protecting the hard drive outside of the NVR.I'd buy it again if I needed a single drive slot in an external enclosure. However, I will be looking and multiple drive slots next.
