Hi dear customer, Thank you for your inquiry. Yes, the screws are exposed. Here are two occasions regarding how to use the latch : 1. If you want to prevent uninvited guests/trespassers, please install the latch indoors. Adding a padlock can prevent someone from lifting the latch outside through the gap between your gate/doors. 2. If you want to prevent something like livestock to break out of a fence/gate, install the latch outdoors. Adding a padlock, in this case, can secure the latch and prevent unwanted incidents of letting them out. If that is still a concern to you, our suggestion is to use tamper proof screws instead.
