Q: We tested it today and scanner was a little picky on how we held the scanner to get it to read. suggestions on what we can do differently?

I found that the best is to keep it 2-3 inches away from the code. Distance also depends on the size of the barcode

Q: is this scanner plug and play?

Yes it is. Plugged it into my Windows 10 Desktop with no problem.

Q: Why do I have to unplug and replug the usb everytime for it to work?

You must gave something defective on your usb driver. I would suggest getting a replacement. We have never had to unplug in the USB driver even once. This is the best bar code reader we have ever used.
