Q: How close to the wall can you get the back of your monitors?

I have Samsung 2340's... At very best the center of the monitor where the mount attaches is going to be about 8 inches.

Q: Does the grommet clamp have space for cable passthrough?

The grommet top cover-plate has two slots that allow for the cables you need to pass through. We use a 2.5 inch grommet hole to make sure we can fit keyboard, mouse, 2x power, 2x Ethernet (to phone, from phone to PC), and 2x Display Port cables. The cover on top does not reveal any of the grommet edges and the metal plate on the bottom leaves plenty of room while securely holding the stand in place. We have a few of the 4 monitor version and the 2.5 inch grommet holes works well for those too. Note that there is no pass through the vertical pole nor any access to route wires through it.

Q: How close can you put the monitors?

You can put the monitors as close together as they physically allow. The mounting plates can slide either left or right to accommodate the size of the monitor. However, once you set the mounting plate you cannot temporarily move the monitor to a different angle or pitch. This bracket is designed for a stable, static monitor stand
