Q: Why is this better than the one for $85?

The cheaper one uses a grease that is like glue, especially in cooler weather. They tell you on utube you can take it apart, clean that grease out and then use regular grease. This one has improved bearings and I love it. It moves very easily in all directions.

Q: Can anyone suggest a stick/stand for this in place of a tripod for handheld shoot?

Don't recommend handholding this device.

Q: Why is there a bubble level? It looks like they reused parts from other ballheads without much thought.

Use it to level your tripod then use in-camera adjustments when swiveling your camera.

Q: can I use this with a mono pod?

Probably, but it's easier to put a ball head on the mono pod.
