Can I reseed southern thin lawn without tilling

All fescue is difficult to germinate in the south if you don't first aerate, regardless of variety of fescue seed and where in the south you are. We've occasionally in spring just hired a local aeration company for $100 and then applied the fescue seed with good results. However, if your yard is mostly sun, it'll be harder in spring to germinate even after aeration since the ground temp might be too warm, retarding germination. Fescue is a cool weather grass/seed.

Our experience is that Oct./Nov. still is the optimum fescue reseeding - all but guaranteed if you aerate or even just toss seeds down in spots, water and then leave it alone for 2 weeks (literally, no foot traffic). However, spring fescue reseed/overseed can also work in the south prior to near constant gound warming in May, April latest. Even if aerating first, you'll want to watch the weather report to determine if there's a cool stretch and rains predicted in your area. Then, still water, water, water and NO foot traffic.

Ideally, you want to prepare the soil a month or two before aerating/reseeding: humic acid to loosen soil, some lime and fert (we use Milorganite). Then, aerate, a little top dressing, fescue seed, more top dressing, water for 10-14 days, no foot traffic (and no dogs!).

FYI: The process for a thick, healthy fescue lawn is more intensive than with other types of grass, but the results when done correctly are worth it with a year 'round green carpet. Soooo...best to just bite the bullet and pay for a top quality NO WEED seed like **Winning Colors/LebanonTurf's** brand. Every other fescue seed will contain some amount of weed seed...that will germinate into weeds and which will compete with the fescue, and which you'll then have to apply chemicals to kill. Even if the fescue seed mix contains just .02 weed seed, you'll have weeds germinating with the fescue.
