Great Learning Tool

I am teaching my granddaughters programming as part of their home schooling curriculum. I started with Scratch, which I think is brilliant. We did a structured run through Scratch and they did great! As a next step, I wanted to do some electronics with them , and intended to use Raspberry Pis for that, taking advantage of the GPIO interface. Then I discovered micro:bits. They are much more basic than Raspberry Pis, but they have two big advantages over Raspberry Pis for education. (1) They have on-board hardware that can be controlled using the micro:bit programming language (more on that below...) You can introduce kids to the idea of hardware control without breadboarding. (2) You don't have to teach kids a new OS to use them. My grandkids are already familiar with Windows - I don't want to spend a lot of time teaching them Raspberry Pi OS ( a variant of Linux), which would be a distraction at this point. Maybe later.Microsoft wrote a programming language for micro:bit called Blocks. However, they leveraged the design of Scratch, so my grandkids can leverage their knowledge of Scratch over to Blocks. Initially Blocks was only available as a web app, but recently Microsoft created a stand-alone app for Windows called MakeCode for microbit, which is what we use. It has a lot of special blocks that make programming a micro:bit easy. This Vilros kit has everything you need for using a micro:bit without breadboarding (micro:bit, battery holder, USB cable, wires w/alligator clips, larger soft side storage case) plus some very basic breadboarding kit (small bread board & base, micro:bit to breadboard adapter, pinned wires). If you want to use a micro:bit to do breadboarding with electronic components, there are a variety of kits available. However, the alligator clips allow kids to do some basic off-board electrical projects without breadboarding. Finally, the folks who brought you micro:bit ( the BBC, oddly enough) have created a library of projects that are well within the capabilities of interested kids. I would recommend working through the tutorials in order before trying the more advanced projects - it allows kids to get some successes and confidence under their belts before trying the projects that require more experience. At any rate, I think that micro:bits are well designed for education, as is the Blocks programming language. This kit includes a well thought out set of useful components to compliment the micro:bit.

Very useful

I think the Vilros logo should be inverted and additional support should be given to the microbit board. Other that I am very pleased with this product.

Nice Kit.

This kit is pretty good. The breadboard is usable, the collection of wires and alligator clips is solid, the breakout board that connects to the micro:bit fits with everything else nicely. The micro:bit case and the case for everything is cute. This is a kit has quite a lot to get you going. Maybe not as a first kit (since has no sensors), but most definitely as a second kit.
