ONE OUT OF EVERY EIGHT AMERICANS IS AFRAID OF FLYING...MOST OF THEM DO NOT HAVE FEATHERS
Blu a domesticated blue Macaw, who was captured as a chick, cannot fly. And you, my fellow cinemaphobes, know that in the end, someway, somehow, Blu will be flying. After some excellent computer-animated features - ICE AGE, HORTON HEARS A WHO, etc - Blue Sky Studios hit a home run on this, their sixth feature. The visual technology here - especially in 3D - is every bit as good as the best from Pixar, DreamWorks and Disney Studios. Beyond the visuals, though, this is just a fun film for the entire family, with a humorous, heartwarming story...the actual rating is G, not PG; Blue Sky was able to get the original rating changed. There is also some top drawer voice acting in this film, by Jesse Eisenberg, as the nerdy, flightless, Blu; Ann Hathaway, as his love interest, Jewel; Leslie Mann as Linda, the owner of Blu; and Rodrigo Santoro as Tulio, who wants to get Blu and Jewel together because they are the last of their species. Also listen for Jamie Foxx as Nico, a canary who looks like Tweetie-Bird; and George Lopez, as Raphael, a Toucan who helps Blu and Jewel. There is plenty of adventure; plenty of romance between Blu and Jewel and Linda and Tulio; and plenty of song and dance numbers to a Brazilian beat...it ain't called RIO for nothing. And since this is a family movie - great for kids and adults of all ages - you know the ending will be a happy one. One of my favorite animated features and I think it will become one of yours too.

One of my favorites
This a great movie, not just for the adorable characters but the lessons it teaches - lessons of acceptance and not giving up. I think this will always be one of my favorites to share with my son.

Weak story line, lots of sexual undertones
I did not care for this movie at all! We watched it with our 9 and 11 yr olds and as a parent I did not appreciate that throughout the entire movie, the goal was for the two birds to have sex because they're about to go extinct. LOTS of sexual undertones and promiscuity by all the animals. For example: in one scene when the 2 main birds are trying to break free of an entanglement, it is made to look like they're having intense sex and the onlooking birds praise the male bird for getting the girl. The villain was all about crime and theft and negatively added to the (weak) plot. (I know villains are the "bad" person in a story, but I feel it went overboard with the desire to commit crime, especially the part where they pay a young street boy to steel). The main character, Blue, does eventually build up his courage to fly on his own and the two birds eventually fall in love and have a family of their own and of course good out-weighted evil. But the whole storyline just wasn't a positive message. Partying and sex IMO does not make a good story for a children's movie. Pass this one up and find a good wholesome movie with good character development, a thickening plot and positive message for your kids.

A Family Movie
Truly a family movie. I just felt a little sad watching the story. There were two main themes that depressed me. The extinction of a species because two animals will not revive a species from extinction. The other was that the bird did not fly. I am a lover of companion birds and as a previous owner, I learned that flight is extremely important to the health of a bird. Birds that do not fly a little every day tend to be fat and depressed. This leads to premature death or illness. Even with the flight feathers trimmed they can still fly in a manner. So if you are or have been a companion bird owner and lover I think you will find this movie a little sad. I feel that the writers did not intend to make a sad movie so I can't give it a five. Otherwise, the film was striking visually well written and directed and the voices were wonderful. Truly something for everyone in the family.to enjoy.

Awesome family movie.
Anyone that does not like this movie is being a snob. This is a great movie with an awesome message to kids. We need to save these birds. Most large parrots are endangered and this shows one reason why they should have tried to add in the deforestation to really send a message. My daughter loves this movie we have watched it almost everyday since we bought it. I don't even get sick of it. I grew up with birds so maybe that's what I love it more then the average person.

Hour and a half of brightly colored fluff and cuteness. This animated comedy-adventure centers on Blu, a rare macaw who thinks he is the last of his kind.

alright for either family or singular viewing. unless your normal. then its only really ok for family viewing.
great film to watch with the kids... or alone... because like me you have no friends and no social life and spend your time instead playing video games, pretending to be a nice person, messing around with useless technology before watching a children's film and crying yourself to sleep.the 3d was also nice quality.the films is well animated considering the studio, and all in all, it is rather entertaining. the musics pretty good too. just ask my neighbor. :-)

Just Wow
Wow!Amazing! I saw this film in the cinema in 3D and I was amazed by it so I got it on dvd (also because my sister wanted to see it because she hadn't seen it before) I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was on the big screen but I was wrong. Without the 3D glasses (that darken the screen slightly) you are able to appreciate the wonderful colours and animation properly. It is magnificent! The music that has been chosen is also outstanding and really gets you in to the carnival spirit - there were a few times both at home and at the cinema when I wanted to get up and dance! The storyline is great and teaches you to believe in yourself which I think is a great message for children. This film is highly recommended and is one of the best animations I have seen - You won't be disappointed! Now off to carnival! :D

Perfect viewing for ALL ages.
I bought this for my daughter and a very worthwhile purchase it has been too. Avidly watched and thoroughly enjoyed by the whole family, ages from 7, 10, 14, 15 right through to adult.Since the film arrived on Saturday (today's Monday) it has been watched 3 times by my daughter and I am sure many more viewings will be on the cards. For those of you who are not already in the know ... Rio is the humorous yet emotionally charged story of 'Blu' a nerdy flightless macaw who embarks on an adventure and finds loyalty, friends, love and ultimately his inner hero.'Rio' is exactly what you would expect from the accomplished makers of 'Ice Age', exciting adventures, beautiful scenery, wonderful and memorable characters and a story full of humour and originality.Perfect for your collection of DVDs

ENTERTAINING FAMILY FILM
The film was very colourful which would keep very young children interested even if they didn't follow the plot. I found the sound quality very poor and had to turn the volume up very high to hear it.
