Another artist writing a book to show THEIR talent. No lessons here.
While the paintings in the book are lovely, and the steps are shown in a detailed way, this book does not actually show technique at all. Anyone who has painted even rudimentary landscapes already knows about paper, paint, mixing and brush care. Once you venture to these details, more actual techniques are helpful.

few actual techniques taught
There were few actual techniques taught in this book. 60-70% of the book was just examples of the authors work with captions that rarely even addressed the technique used in said work.

Great Vary of Barns in Watercolor
Interesting Barns from Europe. The cover of the book looks like any old country scene in the North America. But the book has more interested and varied barns within the book. He has many examples with demonstrations like the Windmill on pages 54 to 61 with 28 step by step pictures of his painting work in progress. He tells you the size and type of watercolor paper along with the materials and colors used. Within this book, he has examples of how to make roofs and wood on the side on buildings look real. I have tin roofs, tile roofs and wood shingle roofs. He has old gray wood with some bricks on the outside of the barn walls. He has great prospective of looks at the barns from different angles.

Painting Rustic Buildings
Great book, especially for those who are intimidated by drawing. All the lessons have illustrations that can be enlarged on a copier.

Excellent Reference
I painted some studys of an old barn and was begin to put together my final composition when I found this book. The section on perspective is the best and clearest explanation I have ever seen. The examples and instructions for painting old wood and rust are simple, but easy to follow. I got great results using this book. Highly recommend it. Also check out Painting Weathered Buildings in Paint, Ink & Waterhcolor. The two books have different examples and techniques and both are worth adding to your library if you paint weathered surfaces.

A great artist says this book deserves 5 stars
I'm not an artist. This book is for my Mother, a great artist, and she loves Terry Harrison's books. It's obvious why in this book, which has images and tutorials which even I can see are well done and attractive. Anyway, she thinks the book deserves 5 stars, and I'm sure she's right.

Great country scenes!
I live way out in the country (hey, it's America-we have LOADS of country!) and barns are a big part of the picture here. I find them lovely to look at, even the ones that are one good breeze away from collapse. Harrison does justice to their unique style.

Excellent Book
I love old buildings and structures such as water mills and its not a subject covered too much in waterolour books, which tend to mainly focus on landscapes. I am new to this artists work but a huge fan already. The book is well laid out and structured, taking you through how to sketch boats and then how to lay on colours to add depth and persepctive. I would have liked a few more examples step by step but I also enjoyed the author's artwork which gave many different varieties of buildings and scences which ignited a spark of creativity to try things on my own, so I think in that respect the book really deserves 5 stars. I would recommend this book.

I'm sure that some reviewers will not like this book because they don't like the painting style ...
I'm sure that some reviewers will not like this book because they don't like the painting style Terry uses. Personally I find the style ok in some pictures and a bit overwhelming in others. In my opinion Terry has a tendency to overwork the detail, a bit like taking a photograph always at F/32, so that everything is in sharp focus from front to back, and this can lose a bit of atmosphere (note he doesnt always do this - but does tend towards applying details in parts of the image where they dont really belong). This for me though is not a problem at all, and not the reason I bought the book; what I like is the advice given on what colours are good to mix together, what brushes are useful for what, and general technique tips.I would say this is not a book for the absolute beginner, but it is good for those looking to improve their artworks with some rustic buildings! As for style - if you don't entirely like Terry's (and I do kindof fall into that category), you can still use his tips - and apply your own style to it - which is really what you should be doing in any case as you develop as an artist. So I would recommend this, and many other of this authors books, as they are pretty compreshensive and well explained, so that you can aquire similar results, but in your own style, if you put them to use.

So, so....
I feel a little disappointed by this book as it's mostly photographs of Terry's works, good as they are. I was hoping for a little extra guidance for the beginner on how to draw the buildings. Instead we are told what colours to use, and what to mask. It lacks the comfortable hand holding that warmed me to some of his other books. Some good tips, sure, but, personally not to my taste.

Good book. Should have been sold as "used"
The book is very good. However, it was quite badly damaged on delivery. The front cover is creased and it looks like it's been lying around for some time
