Much Better than Expected

I've been using a tool similar to this from an unknown manufacturer for probably the last 20 years. While not exceptionally accurate, it certainly made laying out non-critical, repeat increments a snap. I just discovered that my original tool somehow got bent, and ordered this unit as a replacement. The first thing I noticed was how heavy duty this unit is compared to my original. The one I had was made of aluminum that is about 1/32" thick (0.039") while the material for this tool is about 5/64" thick (0.78"). That's a big difference. Also there has been an improvement in the Trend M/P2P01 since the pictures currently shown on Amazon. There are now "Lock Bars", short cheater bars that insert through the "Pinch Bolts" to provide added leverage when tightening/locking the tool (see my attached pictures).I never intended to use this for precise work, but the manual that came with the tool states "... the accuracy of the Mk2 has been improved ...", and that combined with comments by other reviewers made me curious. So I took a couple of measurements. I set the gap between the first two reference points to 1.50" on both tools, and then measured the gap between the subsequent points. Since the Amazon review editor isn't very friendly for displaying tables, I've attached the results table as a picture. The accuracy of this version of the Trend M/P2P01 is a marked improvement over my original tool, and certainly good enough for most of my woodworking projects (e.g. spacing shelves vertically). The only things I don't like are that my original tool had finer points on the end of the arms, and its method of construction kept the pointer arms upright. But overall this is probably a superior tool to the original, and well worth the money if you can live with the accuracy of tools of this type.

Great tool for the job

For my purposes, this tool works very well. I'm a confectioner and I use this tool to measure equal portions on confectionery slabs. It's much faster than measuring and dividing and it really shines in cases where your edges aren't straight because you can visually find your reference point. It's also made of stainless steel, so it can be kept sanitary. My criticism of the tool has to do with the knobs: first, they don't really lock the span into place, you only get a bit more friction if you tighten the knobs. Second, because expanding/collapsing the tool turns the knobs, you can easily break them (as I did) by extending the tool when the knobs are tight. It causes overtightening, snapping the screw. If the knobs really locked the tool into position, you'd avoid this problem because you'd be forced to loosen the knobs when changing the extension of the tool. Poor design, but considering the price, probably unavoidable. There are complaints in other reviews about accuracy, and I don't doubt that's an issue depending on what you need, this thing is fairly cheaply made. For what I'm doing, it's just fine. If you need more accuracy, you can get better dividers if you're willing to spend a lot more.

Not required, not super-accurate, but saves time.

First: I received the 'MK II' version even though I didn't order the one that was specified as such. I've only had this for a week, but have already used it for several projects. This is a tool that is not required to get a job done, but definitely saves time and frustration.Regarding accuracy: This is the perfect tool for laying out non-critical projects. If you're looking for areospace or machinist type accuracy, you'll want to confirm your measurements with better tools. For finding centers, I still reach for my Incra rulers, but when it comes time to lay out 3, 4, or 5 of something across that center line, it's hard to beat the convenience of this tool.

Everyone needs one of these.

Helps with equal spacing of almost everything woodworking.

Works ok.

Not very accurate, maybe to about 1/8 inch. Good for general spacing.

M-Power P2P and Trend M/P2P are ABSOLUTELY IDENTICAL!!!

M-Power P2P and Trend M/P2P are ABSOLUTELY IDENTICAL!!! Even the package is identical with only the paper inserts differentiating between the brands. Buy the cheapest version of these two and you will be happy. I will try to add photos later, but here’s my test/review of both version. Personally, I bought both and returned the most expensive after my comparison.First, I’d use either the short edge or “V”/90-degree cut-out, but all three points (Long, Short, V) were 132mm between all 7-arms at full extension. The “Old Version” had trouble, the long edge was 1/8” to 3/16” off from point 1-2 to points 6-7; but the ”New Version” edges were within 0.5mm(1/50”) between all points at full 32” extension (132mm between each set of points). Manufacturers recommend a functional “full extension” of 28”/711mm; I was able to get a full extension of 31-3/4”/806mm, but would personally recommend max 30”/770mm. The further you extend the scissors the get more flexible/flimsy and tend to get wedged/lock in position. Although, at 806mm all small edges were still within 0.5mm. For 99% of users this accuracy is great. For those who demand/need greater than 0.5mm or 1/50” over 30” length, then this $35 item is NOT for you. If you need accuracy within 1/100” or nano-meters then plan on spending $300-500 or more. For the rest of us, these items work great.Measured against each other; both Trend and M-power show no difference between them at each parking point.Final note, make sure you lock it down BEFORE you begin to mark. Failure to do so will lead to self-created errors due to operator error/failure.Enjoy and Cheers!
