Very impressed, cleared my Honda crv vsa warning light. Solid professional, intuitive.

Surprisingly a solid and quality feeling piece of kit that actually feels professional.Apart from a bit of a tricky updating process (hence 4 rather than 5 stars) I'm really very pleased with this Autel ml629. Very intuitive menu system, solid feel buttons, clear screen, long lead, comprehensive functions including car specific sub-menus.I couldn't get the device to connect to my laptop using the update utility (even whilst holding down the left arrow) but used the alternative method of removing the sd card and popping it in a reader in my laptop and starting up the update software - worked fine. It downloads all updates for the various car models to the card, then you pop the card back in the unit - all good.I had a VSA warning light on my Honda CR-V 2006, left over from my local garage who fixed something else but couldn't work out how to clear the VSA light. This unit cleared the light successfully by using the car specific Honda scanning menu item which successfully found the error and I was able to clear it and recalibrate the abs system within minutes automatically. So overall very impressed and saved myself £££'s that I might have spent getting my car VSA warning light cleared. Obviously if there is something wrong with my car then the warning light will come back and I'll take it to a garage but I was sure this particular issue was caused by the local garage doing an obd scan using their own tool because I was there watching when they did it and noticed the light pop on after they cleared a knock sensor warning. (I think their unit was a generic one).

Straightforward to use

I spent a lot of time researching diagnostic tools that would suit my needs and I'm not disappointed with this one. Autel seem to have a pretty good reputation and a wide range of devices for a wide range of applications and they've been around for a while which helps build confidence. This is a really easy tool to use. It is logical and user-friendly, the lead is pretty long so doesn't cause difficulties if trying to use on the move. The software for my Subaru was already loaded and up-to-date. I had a check-engine light and was able to use the tool to quickly identify the problem (with a component on the secondary air injection system) and was able to fix the problem myself and use the tool to delete the trouble codes. The tool has easily saved me the cost involved in going to a garage for repairs. Looking at other functions, you're able to read a wealth of information from the various engine sensors in real time and it's good to know I can use this tool with other cars. My only slight gripe is with registering the tool which should be straightforward but I found the device password a bit of a challenge to find - that may just be me though and otherwise this is a great tool.

Does more than your average scanner :)

Great scanner with a wide coverage of vehicles - allows you to interrogate individual systems as well as just a standard OBD read - very happy with it and will save me a fair few pounds spent at garages!

Overpriced

I believe there are many better, yet cheaper products on the market. Otherwise worked perfectly.

Car faults scanned / diagnosed

Car is a V60 Volvo 2013 D4162T. My level of experience is the odd bit of work on guitar electronics, multimeters, car oil/filters/brake pads/rotors and wiring in leisure batteries and dash cams. So I didn't know exactly what device I needed at first to work on the car electronics.I gave up researching after a few hours and asked Autel for help by email. They replied the same day suggesting this ML629 was compatible with my car. I didn't need to read the manual, just plugged it in and it was easy enough to use.Within 2 minutes I was able to clear fault codes relating to the engine control module and a cabin fan blower circuit. I did have AC issues and replaced that fan last year as it was permanently stuck on so the Autel was showing up that old fault accurately. I had just never cleared it before. They're gone now. I can now focus on the SRS module fix.The SRS module It shows up as unavailable and I've checked there is an issue with the wiring I think and I think the Autel device is working correctly but it can't read it, nor could the dealer. I can't fault the ML629, it's been great. Without it I'd have been double checking my seatbelt pretensioners, connectors, clock spring, airbags around the car etc. Now I know to focus on the SRS module itself. I've seen videos of the ML629 resetting SRS warning lights so I think the Autel product would do that for me if it could communicate with the module.I'm now working through the wires trying to find a short on any cable which has a higher resistance and checking for a faulty connector. If there's nothing obvious then I'll remove the SRS module and send it off for a software reset or a cloned second hand device. The dealer would only give a rough verbal estimate of £900-1200 for a new module and their labour cost to find and fix the fault. Since I've researched the problem and bought this scanner I can find cheaper 2nd hand parts online so it will likely cost me £100 on a new SRS module and a couple hours work to connect that back in.I'm happy with the outcome so far. I'll use the device's other features in future and the Autel customer service is helpful if you send them your VIN they tell you what they expect will work best for your fault.
