Q: Will this work for frs/gmrs?

Yes. Not setup from factory for use on gmrs/frs. Must modify settings and band for that. This radio model fcc is not legal for gmrs/frs. Radios are certified for transmitting and use in certain bands. This is certified for 2 meter and 70cm ham bands. Frs/gmrs is in the upper 70cm but that's above this radios certification and requires license. The removable antenna makes it illegal on frs. A lot of people use them on gmrs and I highly recommend you get a gmrs license 70 dollars good for ten years and that covers your family. And study for your ham technician license. Ham license usually 15 dollars for the test, license free. If your looking for a radio to talk to friends and kids while camping, at the park, or around home. Search and buy frs/gmrs radio. I have programmed mine for gmrs and hold that license, but don't use the gmrs. I programmed that for emergencies only. I have a ham license and use it for that. Great radio, and battery life. DMR is a big plus.

This radio will receive but not decode gps aprs packets and display coordinates.

Q: is this radio able to do crossband repeater? also can this radio monitor both bands simultaneously?

Hello! Unfortunately, this radio does not do crossband repeat nor will it simultaneously receive. It only has one receiver. I would recommend looking into the 578 mobile radio which does both of these things.
